Esoteric Erin in Action

Last night I performed my first tarot reading since beginning this blog. I hadn’t intended to post about readings I did until after doing more in-depth studying of the cards, but I wanted to help out my sister and she granted me permission to use this reading, so who am I to look a gift horse in the mouth?

At the moment, my sister is working at a job that meets many requirements on paper, however, it lacks a certain something for her. She wants to find a career path that inspires her and ignites her passions. I tried out a spread I had never used before, but I picked it because it is specifically geared toward trying to find a career that will fulfill you. I have two great books on layouts for tarot cards: “Tarot Spreads” by Barbara Moore and “365 Tarot Spreads” by Sasha Graham. The spread I picked last night was from the latter. I don’t feel I’m at a point where I can create my own spreads yet, so when I need one, I go to a trusted book.

As I do not want to infringe on any copyrighted I’m only going to provide the name of the spread, the questions each of the cards answers, and the card names. I used the RWS (Rider-Waite-Smith) deck in conjunction with the “Job for Me Spread”. There are 11 cards used and I’m going to interpret the spread as I did for my sister. If you disagree, please, tell me; my sister could use all the help she can get!

Card 1: What do I like to do?     Page of Pentacles

Card 2: Why do I like to do it?     The World

Card 3: What don’t I like to do?     Judgement

Card 4: Why don’t I like to do it?     The Magician

Card 5: What am I naturally good at?     The Fool

Card 6: What past jobs have I found satisfying?     VI Pentacles

Card 7: What should I avoid in my career?     Page of Swords

Card 8: Who is influencing my career choices?     VIII Swords

Card 9: Who helps me in my search?     VII Swords

Card 10: What would I enjoy doing again?     Knight of Pentacles

Card 11: What card describes the perfect job for me?     King of Wands

At first glance I see three things. One, there are no Cups so we’re not working with big emotions here, it’s a career reading. Two, there’s a pretty equal division of Swords and Pentacles cards. Three, there are four Major Arcana cards which signifies to me that this is a monumental decision in her life.

The Page of Pentacles makes sense to me as an answer for question one because it’s an Earth card. My sister is an environmentalist no doubt. She even has a degree in it. Court cards are not always read as people, but if I had to pick a card for my younger, unmarried, down-to-earth, good with money sister from the Court cards it would probably be the Page of Pentacles. As such, I see her having a great connection to the planet which ties in to question two.

The World card is not necessarily about our planet, but it makes sense here; she loves the earth and when asked about a problem she would solve for humanity, her first thoughts are about environmental issues. I like that the World is an ending card because she wants to see the end result of harmony and a job well done.

Judgement is another card that can be taken by its name in the context of my sister. She doesn’t like to be judged (not that I know anyone who does), but I see it as the penultimate Major Arcana card, things are almost over, and one book even has the key phrase “career change” for this card. It’s a card for change and I think she’s afraid of that change when paired with The Magician for why she doesn’t like to do it.

The Magician has mastery. He has everything he needs and he has learned how to use it. It’s one thing to know something, but quite another to apply it. This leads to what she is naturally good at. The Fool has a bag and in that bag are all the tools that will be needed, but the Fool doesn’t know how to use them yet. My sister is naturally good at acquiring the skills, but she may not like having to apply them in an advanced setting.

I love that we drew the Six of Pentacles for past jobs she has found satisfying because my sister has worked with environmental groups that give knowledge. When I looked at the Six of Pentacles at first for this reading, what stood out to me was the person giving to the needy. She may nor have worked with giving monetary donations to people, but she disseminated knowledge to those who can work toward making our planet a better, cleaner place to live.

The Page of Swords for what she should avoid in her career I interpreted as needing to avoid things that are too cerebral. She needs to be connected to the earth as the Page of Pentacles rather than in the realm of thoughts. I’m not saying not to think, but she needs more grounding in a career.

It’s interesting that we drew the Eight of Swords for who is influencing her career choices because I read that card as being bound and blindfolded, but surrounded by the tools that could free her. She may have put personal blinders on about thinking outside the box for career choices because of a desire to conform to the status quo and thinking “who does that?”.

The Seven of Swords for who helps in the search is tough for me to interpret because I see it as someone running away with swords. I tried to expand my thinking and checked some of the reference books I have. Luckily, it’s another card with the key phrase “a career change”. It doesn’t really answer who, but I feel it’s a good omen. Looks like a card for me to meditate on more when I start my card-a-day study!

Another Pentacles card for what she would enjoy doing over and over again. I like the idea that the Knight of Pentacles is the only one standing still, but you can tell he is ready to jump into action. My sister loves traveling, but she also likes a place to call home. I think she needs a job where she can travel and share her knowledge with others, but that she can still  come home to when she needs it.

Finally, the King of Wands. I think this is an extremely good omen because he’s an enterprising man, but he’s older so he’s seen as more stable than a Knight. In my opinion, my sister needs to go out on a limb, do something innovative, maybe start her own business. She’s my sister so I’m biased, but she could do anything.

Peace and balance,

Erin
